The fast bowler Set to Play a Key Part in the Ashes

Test match action

The pace bowler has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming Ashes series.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches kicking off on November 21 in Perth.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about his chances of participating.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and various factors involved, not just the physical problem, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a major part. With luck it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand recently after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

He has a history of back injuries, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from three Australian summers in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

He mentioned that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and mentioned that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches anyway. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
