European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US on five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the rules are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
