The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.
The one-time leader was found guilty of planning a military coup in last fall and given more than a 27-year term in jail, but he was staying under house arrest pending legal challenges.
High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after fresh information emerged.
This involved attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a demonstration that could facilitate a chance to flee".
Court Filing Details Flight Fears
In a document approving the arrest, Justice Moraes said information from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the tracking monitor to ensure success in his getaway".
This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his son.
His offspring, his son Flávio, who serves as a senator, called for a meeting of his backers near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your country, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your sofa? I call on you to battle with us."
He said the vigil would be so supporters could "pray for his health and for the return of democracy in our country."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the magistrate's ruling was the chance of Bolsonaro's "relocation to embassies near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a record of organizing to seek refuge through a consular facility", a declaration said.
The legal document underscores that the US embassy in the capital, Brazil's capital, is positioned around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.
Global Responses
His judicial problems have drawn the ire of fellow right-wing populist American leader Trump, causing him to enact a fifty percent tax on goods coming from Brazil.
He is being kept in a federal law enforcement building in Brazil's capital city and will have a imprisonment assessment on the next day.
Latest Court Petitions
It was only on the previous day that the his legal team asked the Top Court to authorize him to complete his entire prison term under house arrest, with digital surveillance.
They also requested that the former president be authorized to leave his home for healthcare, saying he required ongoing care for lung conditions and other health problems.
Context of Sentencing
The former president was determined responsible of leading a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he lost the national vote to his ideological adversary, President Lula.
Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a scheme which included plans to murder Lula and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing his judicial proceedings.
The scheme was stopped because it failed to get the support of the armed forces officials. His successor was took office without issue on 1 January 2023.
But a week later, on 8 January, numerous Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised government buildings in the capital, Brazil's capital.
The security forces took action and around 1,500 people were detained.
The justices found that the protesters had been incited by him whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, bring back stability and bring him back to power.
At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also banned from running for public office until twenty-sixty - eight years later after the completion of his term.
The one-time head of state called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the next presidential race.
